WATER TREATMENT · 34 MIN FROM OUR CORTLAND OFFICE
Canfield’s city water comes already filtered from Youngstown’s system, and every lead round on EPA’s record since 2017 is under the action level. The highest was 0.00811 mg/L, in the first half of 2022.
Serving our communities since 1967
USGS sampled Mahoning County wells between 1978 and 2001. That shows what is common here, and your own water test sets the size of the system.

Water Tends to Need.
Chatfield Water Systems is one line, with one system per problem. Your water test decides which ones you need and in what order; the county record shows which are likely.

Water softeners
60% of sampled Mahoning County wells were hard or very hard, at a median of 10.2 grains per gallon. Your softener is sized to your own test.

Chlorine removal
Canfield’s public water is disinfected surface water, so the chlorine is still in it at the tap. The CityLux takes it out of the whole supply.

WATER TREATMENT IN CANFIELD
What Canfield Water Says,
and What We Do About It.
Water bought from Youngstown’s city system
Canfield’s city water system (EPA ID OH5000503) is run by local government and serves 7,706 people through 3,410 connections. It buys surface water from Youngstown’s city system, filtered before it is sold, and stores it in 2 tanks. EPA lists no treatment steps for the city system itself.
So this record doesn’t say which disinfectant reaches your tap. The utility’s water report does. A whole-home CityLux removes chlorine and chloramine alike, so it fits either answer. If a pool-like taste or smell is what you notice, chlorine taste walks through the options, and a test at the tap confirms what is actually there.
Six-month lead rounds since 2022
From 2017 through 2021, EPA recorded the city’s yearly 90th-percentile lead result as zero. From 2022 the record moves to six-month rounds: 0.00811 mg/L for the first half of 2022, then zero, then 0.0025, 0.00205 and 0.00381 through mid-2024, and zero for each round since. All of them sit under the 0.015 mg/L action level.
The 90th percentile is taken across homes sampled in the city, so it can’t speak for one house. Your tap depends on your own service line and fixtures. A test through a certified lab gives your number, and if it finds lead, an Atlas Filtri Oasis Sanic reverse osmosis system at the kitchen sink is the usual fix. Start with water testing.
Deep private wells nearby
ODNR logs within 5 miles put the median well at 120 feet, and a quarter of them run past 165 feet. Rock starts at a median 33 feet, water stands a median 27 feet down, and the median yield is 15 gallons a minute, with half the wells between 10 and 20. The mapped bedrock is the Allegheny and Pottsville Groups: Pennsylvanian shale, siltstone, limestone and sandstone.
With limestone in that mix, hardness belongs near the top of the test. A LuxSoft softener is matched to the measured hardness and the household’s water use. If the same test finds iron, the FerronX Iron System goes in first so the softener isn’t left doing that job.

A LITTLE CLARITY
Canfield Questions.
Straight Answers.
Does Canfield treat the water it buys from Youngstown?
EPA’s record lists no treatment steps for the city system. The water arrives already filtered from Youngstown’s city system, and the details of that treatment belong in the utility’s water report. What happens between the main and your faucet, in your service line and plumbing, is what a test at your own tap measures.
Can a Canfield home get its own tap tested for lead?
Yes. The city’s rounds describe the 90th percentile of sampled homes, not yours. Chatfield can have your tap’s lead measured through a certified lab, and if it shows up, reverse osmosis at the kitchen sink takes care of your drinking water. Call the Cortland office at (330) 828-6060 to set it up.
What if a well near Canfield smells like rotten eggs?
That smell usually means hydrogen sulfide, and a test confirms it and measures the level. The CataPure Carbon System handles it, paired with chlorine or peroxide injection depending on the reading. If iron turns up in the same test, the iron filter goes in first, ahead of the carbon.
Do you test water in Canfield?
Yes. Chatfield’s water test and consultation cover Canfield from our Cortland office, about 34 minutes away by road. The test measures what is in your water and at what level, and any equipment it points to is quoted after the results.
