WATER TREATMENT · 26 MIN FROM OUR CORTLAND OFFICE
The USGS record for Mahoning County wells has no iron or manganese figures, hardness from just five wells and pH from seven, all sampled in 1978 and 2001. For a well here, your own test supplies what the county numbers can’t.
Serving our communities since 1967
USGS sampled Mahoning County wells between 1978 and 2001. That shows what is common here, and your own water test sets the size of the system.

WHAT WE INSTALL IN MAHONING COUNTY
The Equipment Mahoning
Water Tends to Need.
Chatfield Water Systems is one line, with one system per problem. Your water test decides which ones you need and in what order; the county record shows which are likely.
- HARD AT THE MEDIAN
Water softeners
60% of sampled Mahoning County wells were hard or very hard, at a median of 10.2 grains per gallon. Your softener is sized to your own test.
EXPLORE - BY THE TEST
Iron & manganese removal
The public record is silent here, so orange stains and black flecks are the clue. The FerronX goes in at the point of entry, ahead of the softener.
EXPLORE - BY THE CALL, NOT THE RECORD
Sulfur removal
Hydrogen sulfide isn’t in the county record; the rotten-egg smell gives it away. Injection, dosed from the test, and the CataPure carbon system take it out.
EXPLORE - AFTER THE FILTERS
UV sanitation
Bacteria aren’t in the public record either; a coliform test finds them. The Luminor UV lamp follows a sediment filter and treats every gallon entering the house.
EXPLORE - AT THE SINK
Reverse osmosis
Nitrate, arsenic, lead and PFAS are dissolved and tasteless. The membrane takes them out at the tap you drink from.
EXPLORE - FIRST, EVERY TIME
A water test
Every system above starts with a test of your well or your tap water, from our Cortland office, about 26 minutes from Mahoning. What it finds decides which equipment you need and the order it goes in.

WATER TREATMENT IN MAHONING COUNTY
What Mahoning Water Says,
and What We Do About It.
No iron or manganese on file
The Mahoning County samples on our record include no iron or manganese results. That is a gap, not a clean result: nothing in it says the metals are absent, and nothing says they are present. The first test on a Mahoning County well should read both.
The signs to watch for are orange stains from iron and dark brown or black ones from manganese, on fixtures, dishes and laundry. Both lines are low, 0.3 mg/L for iron and 0.05 mg/L for manganese, so a small amount can mark a sink. If a test finds either metal over its line, a FerronX Iron System sized to your result and your well’s flow takes out both.
Five wells for hardness, seven for pH
Hardness is on record for 5 wells, with a median of 10.2 grains per gallon and 60% hard or very hard. pH is on record for 7, with a median of 7.6 and none below 6.5. Both samples are small, and the most recent sampling was in 2001.
On this record, hard water shows up and acidic water doesn’t. A LuxSoft water softener sized to your own result deals with the scale hard water leaves in water heaters and on glass. A calcite neutralizer only earns its place if your pH comes in under 6.5, which none of the county’s sampled wells did, and a water test settles that.
Sebring’s Mahoning River treatment
Sebring Village is the one system mapped at the county’s towns with its own list of treatment steps. It takes water from the Mahoning River, serves 6,058 people and is mapped at Sebring and Beloit. EPA lists coagulation, flocculation, settling and rapid sand filtration for particles, and powdered carbon for taste and odor. Granular activated carbon controls disinfection by-products, a pH adjustment and an orthophosphate inhibitor handle corrosion, and fluoride is added.
Disinfection is gaseous chlorine, listed both before and after filtration, and chloramine is not on the list. If the chlorine taste or smell bothers you, a CityLux at the point of entry takes it out for the whole house, showers and laundry included.
Youngstown’s purchased water and lead
The Mahoning Valley Sanitary District sells the water that Youngstown City’s system delivers to 130,530 people, including homes in Youngstown, Austintown and Boardman, and EPA lists no treatment steps for the city system itself. Canfield’s system in turn buys from Youngstown.
All three systems’ lead rounds on record came in under the 0.015 mg/L action level. Youngstown’s was recorded as zero in every round but one, 0.0022 mg/L for the round ending June 2024. Sebring’s highest was 0.0102, for December 2016, and every round from 2020 on is recorded as zero. These are 90th-percentile figures for each system; a certified-lab test gives your own tap’s number, and reverse osmosis at the kitchen sink is the usual answer if it finds lead.

A LITTLE CLARITY
Mahoning County Questions.
Straight Answers.
Does Youngstown or Canfield water carry chloramine?
Our record can’t say. EPA lists no treatment steps for either system: Youngstown’s buys from the Mahoning Valley Sanitary District, and Canfield’s buys from Youngstown’s. The utility can tell you which disinfectant it uses. For equipment it matters less than it seems, since a CityLux removes chlorine and chloramine alike, for the whole house.
I’m on a well near North Lima or Poland. What applies to me?
The well side of this page applies to you. EPA’s map shows no public system at North Lima, Poland or most of the county’s towns, so for a home on a well there, the county record and your own test are what count. A home connected to a public supply gets its water report from the utility instead.
Does Sebring’s water get softened?
Not on EPA’s list. Sebring Village lists particle removal, carbon, chlorine, fluoride and corrosion control, but no softening step, so nothing on the list lowers hardness. How hard the river water is isn’t in our record. A test at your tap gives grains per gallon, and a LuxSoft is sized to that if it’s worth adding.
What does Canfield’s lead record show?
Every round from 2017 through 2025 was under the 0.015 mg/L action level. Most were recorded as zero; the others were 0.00811 mg/L for June 2022, 0.0025 for June 2023, 0.00205 for December 2023 and 0.00381 for June 2024. Each is a 90th percentile across the system, and a lab test at your own tap gives your number.
Do you test water in Mahoning County?
Yes. Chatfield’s water test and consultation cover Mahoning County from our Cortland office, about 26 minutes away by road. The test measures what is in your water and at what level, and any equipment it points to is quoted after the results.
Which Mahoning County communities do you serve for water treatment?
All of them, from Cortland. The service map lists 21 Mahoning County communities, including Austintown, Beloit, Berlin Center, Boardman, Campbell, Canfield, and the townships between them; the county line is the boundary, not the town list.
