Chatfield Drilling replaced a submersible pump, extended our well casing above ground, and installed a sanitary cap at our farm house. This is our first experience with a well. Chatfield covers the full private water system: residential and commercial well drilling, well maintenance and well cleaning, geo-technical and environmental services, and pumping systems including submersible pumps, jet pumps, booster pumps, sump pumps, and pressure tanks. On the treatment side, Chatfield handles water softeners, water filters, iron and metals, sulfur, sediment, chlorine taste and odor, water sanitation, and custom whole-home treatment built from test results.
The drilling itself is often a matter of days, but the full project runs longer than the rig time. Depth and geology determine how long drilling takes, and two properties on the same road can differ. Around that sit permitting, site access for equipment, setting the casing, installing the pump and pressure system, wiring, and disinfection and testing before the well is put into service. Chatfield assesses the site first and sets out the expected sequence and timing for that specific property rather than working from a general figure.
Signs worth reporting include a drop in water pressure or flow, a pump that cycles rapidly or runs constantly, air spitting from faucets, water that turns cloudy or turbid, sediment or grit appearing at fixtures, new tastes or odors, or a water test that comes back positive for total coliform. A decrease in the well's capacity — the gallons per minute the pump can supply — is a particularly useful thing to notice. Record what you observe and when rather than trying to identify the failed component.
Service life varies widely with construction, geology, water chemistry, and maintenance, so an average figure is not much use for planning. What is more practical is watching for change: declining capacity, new odors or turbidity, or rising pump cycling are more informative than the well's age. Periodic well system checkups are what turn a gradual decline into something you can address before it becomes an outage.
