WATER TREATMENT · 86 MIN FROM OUR GREENVILLE OFFICE
Girard’s borough water comes from three named wells, Mission, Mohring and Butternut, and EPA lists a treatment plant named for each. All four lead rounds on the system’s record, 2016 to 2025, are recorded as zero.
Serving our communities since 1967
USGS sampled Erie County wells between 1927 and 2023. That shows what is common here, and your own water test sets the size of the system.

The Equipment Girard
Water Tends to Need.
Chatfield Water Systems is one line, with one system per problem. Your water test decides which ones you need and in what order; the county record shows which are likely.
- HARD AT THE MEDIAN
Water softeners
68% of sampled Erie County wells were hard or very hard, at a median of 8.2 grains per gallon. Your softener is sized to your own test.

Iron & manganese removal
33% of sampled wells were above 0.3 mg/L of iron and 83% above the manganese line. The FerronX goes in at the point of entry, ahead of the softener.

What Girard Water Says,
and What We Do About It.
Mission, Mohring and Butternut wells
The Girard Borough Water Department is a groundwater system serving a population of 3,301 through 1,277 connections. EPA lists three active wells and three treatment plants named for them: the Mission Well, Mohring Well and Butternut plants. The steps it reports are few: hypochlorite added after treatment for disinfection, 4-log virus treatment (disinfection strong enough to inactivate viruses), and sequestration for iron and manganese.
So borough water arrives chlorinated, and iron and manganese are handled by sequestration. If the chlorine taste bothers you, CityLux takes it out at the point of entry. For anything else, from hardness to a stain that won’t scrub off, a water test comes before any equipment.
Four lead rounds, each recorded as zero
EPA’s lead table for the borough system has four rounds, for the periods ending September 2016, 2019, 2022 and 2025. In each one, the 90th percentile of homes sampled is recorded as 0 mg/L, against an action level of 0.015 mg/L.
That figure is the system’s, measured across the homes it sampled, and it doesn’t test your plumbing. If you want your own number, a certified-lab test of the kitchen tap gives it. If lead does turn up, reverse osmosis at the sink is the usual answer: the Atlas Filtri Oasis Sanic unit treats the water you drink and cook with, and it also reduces nitrate and arsenic when a panel shows them. The contaminants page covers the lab side.
Deep to bedrock in the Girard Shale
Outside the borough’s lines, homes are on wells, and PaGWIS holds 765 logs within 5 miles. Bedrock sits deep: a median 53 feet in the 325 logs that record it, with a quarter at 85 feet or more. The median well goes to 60 feet, with the middle half from 43 to 86, and the median yield is 10 gallons per minute. The mapped rock is the Girard Shale, Late Devonian siltstone and shale.
Treatment for these wells follows a water test. If it or your filters show grit, an Alluvium Sediment System goes in ahead of the other equipment. Iron or manganese goes to a FerronX Iron System. Chatfield’s crew for this area comes from the Greenville office.

A LITTLE CLARITY
Girard Questions.
Straight Answers.
Does Girard filter iron out of its water?
The borough’s record lists sequestration for iron and manganese rather than a filtration step. Sequestration keeps the metals dissolved so they are less likely to drop out as stains. If you still see orange or dark staining at a borough tap, a water test will show what’s reaching your faucet before you decide on equipment.
Which Chatfield office serves Girard?
The Greenville office. Call (724) 588-2652 to set up a water test and consultation, whether your home is on borough water or a private well. The test at the tap covers the everyday minerals, and anything that needs a certified lab, such as lead or bacteria, goes to one.
Can a Girard well carry manganese even if the water looks clear?
Yes. Dissolved manganese can come out of the tap clear and show up later as black or dark brown staining on fixtures and in laundry. The only way to know is to measure it. A water test at the tap does that, and if it’s over the 0.05 mg/L line, a FerronX Iron System removes it along with any iron.
Do you test water in Girard?
Yes. Chatfield’s water test and consultation cover Girard from our Greenville office, about 86 minutes away by road. The test measures what is in your water and at what level, and any equipment it points to is quoted after the results.
