Sediment is one of the few private-well concerns a household can actually see. That question has more than one possible answer, and none of them can be settled from the appearance of the particles. Describe what you are actually seeing

Start with a plain physical description. Are the particles gritty and sand-like, fine and silty, or fluffy and suspended? What color are they — tan, gray, reddish, dark, or nearly clear? Do they settle quickly to the bottom of a glass, drift slowly, or stay suspended?

The distinction between suspended cloudiness and settleable grit is worth noting, because they are different observations. Water that looks gray or milky and then clears from the bottom up may be a different matter from water carrying visible particles that drop immediately.
