WATER TREATMENT · 56 MIN FROM OUR CORTLAND OFFICE
Lisbon Village runs six wells through aeration, pressure sand and ultrafiltration to remove iron, manganese and particles. Softening isn’t on its list of steps, so hardness is the first thing to check at a village tap.
Serving our communities since 1967
USGS sampled Columbiana County wells between 1986 and 2016. That shows what is common here, and your own water test sets the size of the system.

Chatfield Water Systems is one line, with one system per problem. Your water test decides which ones you need and in what order; the county record shows which are likely.

Water softeners
86% of sampled Columbiana County wells were hard or very hard, at a median of 16.7 grains per gallon. Your softener is sized to your own test.

Iron & manganese removal
79% of sampled wells were above 0.3 mg/L of iron and 86% above the manganese line. The FerronX goes in at the point of entry, ahead of the softener.

What Lisbon Water Says,
and What We Do About It.
Ultrafiltration in Lisbon’s village system
The village system draws groundwater from six active wells and lists one treatment plant, the village water department, and three storage tanks, for 2,821 people on 1,518 connections. EPA lists cascade aeration and permanganate for manganese, pressure sand filtration for iron, and ultrafiltration, a membrane step, for particles. Chlorine goes in before filtration, and disinfection is listed as 4-log virus treatment, strong enough to kill nearly all viruses.
In practice, iron and manganese are dealt with before the water leaves, and it reaches you with a chlorine residual. A CityLux removes chlorine for the whole house if the taste is a problem. Softening is not among the listed steps. A hardness reading at your tap tells you whether scale is worth treating.
Six lead rounds and what they mean
EPA has six lead 90th-percentile results for the system: 0.00495 mg/L in 2018 and 0.00855 in 2021, recorded as zero in 2022 and 2023, then 0.0124 in 2024 and 0.0021 in 2025. Every round was under the 0.015 mg/L action level, and the 2024 figure was the highest.
A 90th percentile describes homes sampled across the village. It can’t tell you what your own faucet delivers, since service lines, solder and fixtures vary from house to house. The way to know is a lead test at your tap through a certified lab, arranged with our water testing. If lead shows up, an Oasis Sanic reverse osmosis unit at the kitchen sink is how we’d treat it.
Wells around the village: water at 60 feet
ODNR lists 1,401 well logs within 5 miles of Lisbon. The median well is 140 feet deep, with half between 100 and 205. Bedrock is reached at a median 20 feet, and the static water level has a median of 60 feet, with the middle half between 36 and 90. Yields are modest, a median of 12 gallons a minute, so backwashing equipment should be sized to the well.
The rock mapped under the village is the Allegheny and Pottsville Groups: shale, siltstone, limestone and sandstone. The county record points to hardness: 86 percent of the sampled wells tested hard or very hard. A LuxSoft softener sized to your test handles it, with the FerronX ahead of it where iron shows up.

A LITTLE CLARITY
Lisbon Questions.
Straight Answers.
Does Lisbon’s water need a softener?
It might. The village system removes iron and manganese, but softening isn’t among its listed steps, so nothing on the list lowers hardness. A hardness test at your tap gives the grains per gallon. If the number is high enough to leave scale on fixtures and in the water heater, a LuxSoft sized to it is the fix; if not, nothing is needed.
What does ultrafiltration in the village system do?
EPA lists it for particulate removal. Ultrafiltration pushes water through a membrane with very fine pores, holding back particles that a sand filter can let through. It happens during treatment, before the water enters the mains. On a private well, the Alluvium Sediment System removes sediment at the point of entry, ahead of any other equipment.
Do wells near Lisbon carry manganese?
It’s common in the county record: manganese topped the 0.05 mg/L line in 86 percent of sampled wells. It shows up as black or brown staining and can give water a bitter taste. The FerronX Iron System removes manganese along with iron, and our water test measures both, with lab work for anything that needs a certified number.
Do you test water in Lisbon?
Yes. Chatfield’s water test and consultation cover Lisbon from our Cortland office, about 56 minutes away by road. The test measures what is in your water and at what level, and any equipment it points to is quoted after the results.
