WATER TREATMENT · 45 MIN FROM OUR CORTLAND OFFICE
Around New Springfield, private wells vary widely in depth: half the logged wells fall between 85 and 167 feet. Nearby wells can draw from different rock, so a neighbor’s water test is no stand-in for your own.
Serving our communities since 1967
USGS sampled Mahoning County wells between 1978 and 2001. That shows what is common here, and your own water test sets the size of the system.

Water Tends to Need.
Chatfield Water Systems is one line, with one system per problem. Your water test decides which ones you need and in what order; the county record shows which are likely.

Water softeners
60% of sampled Mahoning County wells were hard or very hard, at a median of 10.2 grains per gallon. Your softener is sized to your own test.

What New Springfield Water Says,
and What We Do About It.
Half the wells: 85 to 167 feet
ODNR logs within 5 miles put the median well at 116 feet. A quarter stop at 85 feet or less and a quarter go past 167. Rock starts at a median 30 feet, and in a quarter of logs it takes 50 feet or more to reach it. Water stands a median 30 feet down, and the median yield is 15 gallons a minute, with a quarter at 9 or less.
The mapped bedrock is the Allegheny and Pottsville Groups, Pennsylvanian layers of shale, siltstone, limestone and sandstone. A well finished in limestone and one finished in sandstone can give noticeably different water, which is why a water test of your own well beats a guess from next door.
Reading a New Springfield well test
A Chatfield test, on site or through a certified lab, turns those unknowns into numbers. Hardness comes back in grains per gallon and sets the size of a LuxSoft softener, if one is needed at all. Iron is measured against the 0.3 mg/L line where staining starts, and manganese against 0.05 mg/L; above either, the FerronX Iron System goes ahead of any softener. pH below 6.5 points to a calcite neutralizer, and a confirmed coliform result can add a Luminor UV after the filters.
Each system answers one reading, so a home that tests clean on four readings out of five needs just one unit instead of a full line of equipment.
Lab work for New Springfield kitchen taps
Some problems never leave a stain or a smell. Nitrate, arsenic, PFAS and dissolved solids only show up on a test, and the county’s USGS record doesn’t cover them. If a test finds any of them in your well, the Atlas Filtri Oasis Sanic reverse osmosis system at the kitchen sink treats the water you drink and cook with, without resizing the whole-house equipment.
Homes in the area on a public supply get their water report from the utility, and that report is the place to start; a test at your own tap then covers what your plumbing adds. Contaminants explains what each lab test looks for.

A LITTLE CLARITY
New Springfield Questions.
Straight Answers.
My neighbor has a softener. Do I need one too?
Not necessarily. Their test belongs to their well, and with depths spread this widely here, yours may draw different water. A test of your own well gives your hardness in grains per gallon. If the number calls for a LuxSoft, it’s sized to that reading and your household; if it doesn’t, you skip it.
Does a deeper well mean better water around New Springfield?
Not by itself. Depth helps decide which layer of rock a well draws from, and the Allegheny and Pottsville rock here mixes shale, siltstone, limestone and sandstone. A deeper well can come back harder or softer, with more iron or less. What sizes any treatment is the test result.
What’s the first step for a well owner in New Springfield?
Call the Cortland office at (330) 828-6060 to book a test and consultation. The crew tests on site and sends anything that needs a certified lab, then goes through each reading with you. Only the readings that cross a line lead to equipment, and each unit is sized to its number.
Do you test water in New Springfield?
Yes. Chatfield’s water test and consultation cover New Springfield from our Cortland office, about 45 minutes away by road. The test measures what is in your water and at what level, and any equipment it points to is quoted after the results.
