WATER TREATMENT · 27 MIN FROM OUR GREENVILLE OFFICE
Sharon’s tap water from Aqua PA Shenango Valley carries chloramine, a disinfectant that lasts longer than chlorine and stays in the water to the faucet. If you want it out of every tap, not just the kitchen, that is what a CityLux does.
Serving our communities since 1967
USGS sampled Mercer County wells between 1928 and 2023. That shows what is common here, and your own water test sets the size of the system.

Water Tends to Need.
Chatfield Water Systems is one line, with one system per problem. Your water test decides which ones you need and in what order; the county record shows which are likely.
- HARD AT THE MEDIAN
Water softeners
59% of sampled Mercer County wells were hard or very hard, at a median of 7.6 grains per gallon. Your softener is sized to your own test.

Iron & manganese removal
58% of sampled wells were above 0.3 mg/L of iron and 54% above the manganese line. The FerronX goes in at the point of entry, ahead of the softener.

Chlorine removal
Sharon’s public water is disinfected surface water, so the chlorine is still in it at the tap. The CityLux takes it out of the whole supply.

WATER TREATMENT IN SHARON
What Sharon Water Says,
and What We Do About It.
Why Sharon’s water carries chloramine
Aqua PA Shenango Valley draws surface water from the Shenango River and serves about 48,000 people through 17,152 connections. Its EPA treatment list includes chlorine before and after filtration, chlorine dioxide, ultraviolet light, and chloramines, the last entered for disinfection by-product control. Chloramine is chlorine bound to ammonia, and it holds on in the pipes much longer than chlorine alone, so it is still present when the water comes out of your tap.
At the house, chloramine can show up as a taste or smell in drinking water, coffee and the shower. The CityLux removes chlorine and chloramine at the point of entry, so every tap gets the same water. If a taste is the only complaint, the chlorine taste page covers where it comes from.
Hardness on Sharon’s Aqua supply
Softening isn’t among the plant’s listed steps. Lime and soda ash do appear, but EPA files them under particle removal and corrosion control, alongside a pH adjustment after filtration and an orthophosphate inhibitor that protects pipes. So the list doesn’t tell you how hard the water at your tap is.
A hardness reading does. A water test measures it at your sink, and if scale on faucets, spotted glassware or a sluggish water heater match the number, a LuxSoft softener is the fix. If you want the chloramine gone as well, the CityLux softens too, so one unit handles both. The hard water page explains the grains-per-gallon scale if you want to read your result yourself.
Nearby wells and Cuyahoga rock
The communities around Sharon run across the state line into Ohio, but the well logs here come from Pennsylvania’s PaGWIS: 376 logs with a depth within 5 miles. Their median depth is 100 feet, with the middle half from 80 to 140. Rock arrives at a median of 20 feet, and the rock mapped at the town center is the Cuyahoga Group’s siltstone, shale and sandstone, from the Mississippian. Median yield is 15 gallons per minute, 12 to 30 for the middle half.
A private well needs its own test, because the utility’s report covers only the utility’s water. Iron and manganese go to the FerronX Iron System. A coliform result from the certified lab is handled with Luminor UV placed after the filters, once the water running past the lamp is clear.

A LITTLE CLARITY
Sharon Questions.
Straight Answers.
Does a CityLux remove chloramine as well as chlorine in Sharon?
Yes. The CityLux is built for whole-home chlorine and chloramine removal, which matters here because the Aqua system lists chloramines among its steps. It goes in where the water line enters the house, so the shower, laundry and kitchen all get treated water, not only the drinking tap.
Should a Sharon home check for lead?
The system’s 90th-percentile lead level was 0.0028 mg/L for the 2016 round and has been recorded as zero in 2019, 2022 and 2025, under the 0.015 mg/L action level. Your faucet can still differ because of your own plumbing. A certified-lab test gives your number, and reverse osmosis at the kitchen sink is the usual answer if lead shows up.
How quickly do wells near Sharon reach bedrock?
Among the 192 logs that record it within 5 miles, the median depth to bedrock is 20 feet and the middle half fall between 12 and 49. The rock mapped at the town center is Cuyahoga Group siltstone, shale and sandstone. Depth to rock doesn’t tell you what the water carries, so the water itself gets tested before any treatment is chosen.
Do you test water in Sharon?
Yes. Chatfield’s water test and consultation cover Sharon from our Greenville office, about 27 minutes away by road. The test measures what is in your water and at what level, and any equipment it points to is quoted after the results.
