WATER TREATMENT · 31 MIN FROM OUR GREENVILLE OFFICE
Wells around West Middlesex run on modest flow: the logs within 5 miles show a median yield of 15 gallons per minute and a middle half of 10 to 20, so equipment is chosen for the well’s flow along with the water test results.
Serving our communities since 1967
USGS sampled Mercer County wells between 1928 and 2023. That shows what is common here, and your own water test sets the size of the system.

Water Tends to Need.
Chatfield Water Systems is one line, with one system per problem. Your water test decides which ones you need and in what order; the county record shows which are likely.
- HARD AT THE MEDIAN
Water softeners
59% of sampled Mercer County wells were hard or very hard, at a median of 7.6 grains per gallon. Your softener is sized to your own test.
EXPLORE - 58% OF WELLS ABOVE THE IRON LINE
Iron & manganese removal
58% of sampled wells were above 0.3 mg/L of iron and 54% above the manganese line. The FerronX goes in at the point of entry, ahead of the softener.

Chlorine removal
West Middlesex’s public water is disinfected surface water, so the chlorine is still in it at the tap. The CityLux takes it out of the whole supply.

What West Middlesex Water Says,
and What We Do About It.
Sizing treatment to the well’s flow
The state’s PaGWIS records have 364 yield logs within 5 miles of West Middlesex, and their median is 15 gallons per minute, with half of them between 10 and 20. The 450 depth logs put the median well at 110 feet and the middle half at 80 to 145, with bedrock at a median 24 feet down. The rock mapped at the town center is Cuyahoga Group siltstone, shale and sandstone.
Flow matters for treatment. Filters that clean themselves by backwashing need a burst of water to do it, and a softener’s regeneration cycle needs flow too. On a lower-yield well, the equipment, the backwash timing and the pressure tank have to fit what the well can give. That is part of the consultation after the water test, before anything is sized for iron or hardness.
Bacteria and the Luminor UV step
Homes on private wells get no disinfection unless they add it. A coliform or E. coli result comes from a certified lab, and it is the test to run after any work on the well, or if the water changes after heavy rain or snowmelt.
When bacteria shows up, Luminor UV treats the water with ultraviolet light as it passes the lamp. It goes after the filters, because iron, manganese or sediment in the water can shade bacteria from the light. That is why a UV lamp sits downstream of the Alluvium Sediment System or a FerronX. The bacteria page covers the signs and what a lab report means.
What the Aqua plant does before borough taps
On EPA’s map, the West Middlesex town center falls inside the Aqua PA Shenango Valley service area. That plant lists chlorine before and after filtration and ultraviolet radiation for disinfection, and chlorine dioxide and chloramines for disinfection by-product control. Chloramine lasts longer in the pipes than chlorine, and a CityLux takes it out for the whole house.
The same system adds an orthophosphate corrosion inhibitor. Its lead 90th percentile came in at 0.0028 mg/L for the round ending 2016 and has been recorded as 0 mg/L in each round since, through 2025, under the 0.015 mg/L action level. Your own plumbing can differ, and a lab test settles that. If it finds lead, reverse osmosis at the kitchen sink covers it. Homes on the line get the full water report from Aqua.

A LITTLE CLARITY
West Middlesex Questions.
Straight Answers.
Can a lower-yield well near West Middlesex run an iron filter?
It can, if the filter is chosen for the flow. Half of the logged wells here yield between 10 and 20 gallons per minute, and a backwashing filter needs a burst of flow to clean itself. The water test shows what needs treating, and the well’s flow shapes how that treatment is set up.
How often should a West Middlesex well be tested for bacteria?
Once a year is the common advice, and again after any repair that opens the well, after flooding, or when the taste, smell or clarity changes. The bacteria test goes to a certified lab. If it comes back positive, disinfection and a Luminor UV after the filters are the usual next steps.
Does borough water in West Middlesex already get UV?
Yes, at the plant. Ultraviolet radiation is on the Aqua PA Shenango Valley list as a disinfection step, alongside chlorine. That covers homes on the Aqua line. A Luminor UV at the house is for private wells, where nothing treats the water before it reaches the tap.
Do you test water in West Middlesex?
Yes. Chatfield’s water test and consultation cover West Middlesex from our Greenville office, about 31 minutes away by road. The test measures what is in your water and at what level, and any equipment it points to is quoted after the results.
